Without Water, There is no Life

Tanja Kosteva, BSc in Biochemistry, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University "St. Cyril and Methodius" in Skopje.

My career is built to protect the environment, public health, and sustainable water systems. Professionally, as a Department Manager at a Drinking Water Plant in PUC’s Sveti Nikole, North Macedonia, I am responsible for:

  • Supervision of water treatment systems
  • Conducting biochemical laboratory tests
  • Monitoring mechanical and technological processes
  • Ensuring compliance with public health and safety standards

My dedication to water quality management and the water supply system led me to explore digital tools for better quality assurance. In 2022, I completed the Brainster Quality Assurance Academy, and additional training in: Agile methodologies; tools such as qGIS and asset management systems, SQL databases.

I am grateful for the training and education that I am receiving in the country and more widely through the Association of Utility Services Providers in the Republic of Macedonia – ADKOM. I have actively participated in international forums and conferences. In ADKOM, I am a member of the Commission for Digital Transformation of Communal Services in North Macedonia and the World Bank’s NewIBNET platform.

International forums and conferences:

  • Danube Water Conference 2025 -"Looking Back, Looking Forward to the State of the Water Sector" (IAWD & World Bank) and Workshop on climate resilience and crisis management
  • ADKOM Conferences: 11th ADKOM International Conference "Utilities in Smart Cities" in 2023, and the 12th Conference "The Future of the Communal Sector" in 2025.

Advocated for youth integration, digital tools, and sector reform

  • 2024 - 20 years of ADKOM dedicated to environmental protection "From enthusiasm to professionalism". As a young professional in the water sector, we focus on decision-makers to change the systematisation of workplaces if we would like more young people in the water sector. We marked that young people with their digital awareness and ITC tools can replace a large part of the activities that are now done by people.
  • 5th Montenegro Conference 2024: Promoted gender equality and innovation in the water sector. As a presenter of " peer to peers exchange project". We promoted young water professionals and gender equality. The idea is that we would like young people to choose the water sector as a career, and later, how to keep young people in the sector.
  • Romania Water Forum 2024: "Innovations in the water sector for a new climate reality". We saw the latest trends and practices in the water sector. Here we exchanged new ideas and gained from professionals. I had brought innovative ideas for implementation in our organisation.
  • Position Paper (2023–2024): Co-authored Western Balkans youth initiative to connect utilities and universities

As part of RCDN’s “Just Add Water – Every Drop Matters” our mission is that water is a fundamental right, not a privilege.

“Just Add Water - Every Drop Matters” is a campaign to raise public awareness of the importance of water. We educate citizens that water production goes through many health controls before it reaches their homes. The most important thing is that we should all understand the essentiality of water - WITHOUT WATER, THERE IS NO LIFE. In the face of climate change, rational use must start now! I stand alongside global water professionals to advocate for equity, sustainability and resilience - because everyone deserves access to safe water, today and for generations to come.
